Pune Festival, a confluence of music, dance, drama, art, singing, instruments, sports and culture is celebrating its 29th year and the Pune Festival to be held during the Ganeshotsav from August 25th to September 5th, 2017 will be inaugurated on Friday, September 1st at 4:30 PM at the hands of Director Subhash Ghai and actor Shatrughna Sinha (MP) at Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch. Jayakumar Rawal Minister for Tourism (GOM), Girish Bapat Minister for Food and Civil Supplies (GOM) and Guardian Minister of Pune, Dilip Kamble Minister of State for Social Welfare (GOM), Vijay Shivtare Minister of State for Water Resources (GOM), Harshwardhan Patil Ex. Minister, Mukta Tilak, Mayor of Pune, Dr.Siddharth Dhende, Dy. Mayor of Pune will be the guest of honor. Pune Festival’s patron and actress Hema Malini (MP) will also grace this occasion. Bollywood stars Neha Sharma, Vivek Oberoi, Kartik Aryan, Rati Agnihotri and Managing Director of Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation Vijay Waghmare will also be present.

Pune Festival is organized jointly by Pune Festival committee, citizens of Pune, tourism department of Government of India and the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation. This is a big cultural event in the country celebrated continuously for 29 years during the Ganesh Festival inspired by Lokmanya Tilak. All programs in the Pune Festival are free of cost for the citizens.

Special cultural programs by Zee Yuva  and Zee Talkies and All India Urdu Mushaira will be special attractions this year at the Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch. Besides these, various cultural programs like Ugawate Taare, Indradhanu, classical music and dance, Marathi poetry session, standup comedy extravaganza, Mahila Mahotsav, painting competition and exhibition, Miss Pune Festival competition, Marathi plays, Keral Mahotsav etc will take place in the Pune Festival.

As usual various sports competitions will take place during the Pune Festival. Pune Festival Golf Cup Tournament, Malla Khamb competition, Boxing competition and Wrestling competition will be added attractions in Pune Festival.

The events during the Pune Festival this year will take place at Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch, Balgandharva Rangmandir and Kala Dalan, Yashwantrao Chavan Natyagruha and Kala Dalan, Swapnashilp Hall – Apte Road, Pune Golf Club – Yerwada, Mahesh Vidyalay – Kothrud, Lahuji Vastad Salve Stadium, Mamasaheb Mohol wrestling complex – Katraj and Maharashtra Mandal – Tilak Road.  

The Ganesh Idol of Pune Festival will be installed on Friday, August 25th at 10 AM at Hotel Saras Nehru Stadium at the auspicious hands of Chandrakant Dalvi Divisional Commissioner. Vedmurti Dhananjay Ghate Guruji will officiate the ceremony.


As is the tradition, achievers from various fields will be felicitated with ‘Pune Festival Award’ during the inauguration ceremony. This year actor Shekhar Suman, cricketer Kedar Jadhav, veteran director Sumitra Bhave and IT Expert Anand Khandekar will be felicitated with this honor.

The Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav is celebrating its 125th year. To commemorate this occasion Ganesh Mandals like Kasba Ganpati Mandal, Kesari Ganeshotsav, Bhau Rangari Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal, Shrimant Dagduseth Halwai Ganpati Mandal etc will be felicitated at the Inauguration Function.

The inauguration ceremony this year will also be spectacular as usual and this ceremony will start with the Shehnai recital by Tukaram Daithankar. It will be followed by Ganesh Vandana choreographed by danseuse Sharvari Jamenis. The Ganesh Vandana, conceptualized by Swapnil Raste will feature danseuse Sharvari Jamenis, cine actor Mrunmayi Deshpande, Nakul Ghanekar and Radha Kulkari. A special program ‘Maharashtrachya Desha-Shivbachya Desha’ based on inspiring songs on Shivaji and Maharashtra’s culture will be presented at the occasion choreographed by Sangram Bhalkar and art direction by Dhananjay Bhavalekar. It will feature cine actor Bhargavi Chirmule, Nandesh Umap, Abhyang Kuvalekar and a 30-member troupe. It will be followed by demonstrations of Malla Khamb and Yoga by Pune District Malla Khamb Association and Maharashtra Mandal. These demonstrations will take place simultaneously with participation of 15 boys and 15 girls each. Abhijit Bhosale and Sachin Pardeshi have coordinated it under the guidance of Dhananjay Damle. The fusion musical program having fusion of Lavani and Tollywood-Bollywood remix by choreographer Nikita Moghe and participation of 30 artists of Pune Festival including cine artist Urmila Matondkar, Pooja Sawant,  Neha Mahajan, Tejaswini Lonari, Vaishnavi Patil, Vaishali Jadhav and Girija Joshi will be added attraction of inauguration ceremony.

Yogesh Deshpande will be the Marathi compere of the inauguration ceremony while Durriya Shipchandler will be English compere. Dr. Satish Desai is the coordinator of cultural programs of the inauguration ceremony.

Special programs will take place for three days at Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch after the inauguration. In this, special cultural programs will be presented by Zee Yuva and Zee Talkies on September 2nd and 3rd.

The evergreen All India Urdu Mushaira will take place at 8:30 PM on  September 4th in which renowned Urdu poets like Popular Meerathi (Meerath), Johar Kanpuri (Kanpur), Iqbal Ashher (Delhi), Dr. Qasim Imam (Mumbai), Qaisar Khalid (Mumbai), Sunder Maleganvi (Malegaon), Tajwar Sultana (Allahabad), Preeta Bajpai (Delhi), Monika Singh (Pune), Sufiyan Qazi (Khandwa) will participate.    Dr. Qasim Imam from Mumbai will be the compeere of this program. P. A. Inamdar President of Maharashtra Cosmopolitan Education Society, Pune and convener of All India Urdu Mushaira and    Smt. Abeda Inamdar president of The Deccan Muslim Institute, Pune will organize it.

As usual, the Pune Festival is full of Marathi programs this year which include Marathi poetry session, standup comedy extravaganza, Marathi plays, classical recital and dance etc. Mohan Tillu is coordinator of these programs. So as to give their own forum to the new and emerging artists, Ugawate Taare program for children in the age group of 7 to 14 years and Indradhanu for those in age group of 15 to 25 years are held every year in Pune Festival. This year more than 150 artists in Indradhanu and 400 upcoming artists are participating in Ugawate Taare. Ravindra Durve is coordinator for them. All these programs will be held in Balgandharva Rangmandir and Yashwantrao Chavan Natyagruha.

Programs at Balgandharv Rangmandir and Kala Dalan

      Apoorva Meghdoot, a performance by talented blind artists will be presented at Balgandharva Rangmandir at 5 to 8 PM on August 26th. Indradhanu Part 1, the program of presenting various talents of young artists will take place at 5 to 8 PM on August 28th. Indradhanu Part 2 is organized on August 29th. ‘Tadaiva Lagna’ the award winning drama from State Drama Competition will be staged by IPTA at 9.30 PM on same day. It is directed by Ravi Deodhar. The Katthak performance ‘Katthakanjali’ by danseuse Dhanashree Natu-Potdar and colleagues will be presented at 5 to 6.30 PM on August 30th. It will be followed by ‘Nrutyanubhav’ a Bharat Natyam ballet by Swati Daithankar and her colleagues. Nadbrahma Concert featuring old music will be presented on August 31th from 5 to 8 PM. The Keral Mahotsav will be presented by Keralite brethren of Pune Malayali Federation in Pune from 5 to 8 PM on September 2nd on the eve of Onam. The Nrutya Natya ‘Ek Pravas…Savitricha-Savitrikade’ will be presented by Savitri Forum at 9.30 PM on the same day. Supriya Tamhane has directed it. Ugawate Taare part 4 will be presented from 12.30 to 3.30 PM on September 3rd and ‘Shabda Mohini’ a musical program based on Urdu, Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, Sanskrit, German and Spanish songs will be presented by Manjiri Dhamankar and colleagues from 5 to 8 PM. The evergreen Marathi poetry session will be presented at 9.30 PM. Poet Ramdas Phutane and poet Arun Mhatre will compeer it in which noted poets from Maharashtra like Nitin Deshmukh (Amravati), Mahesh Keluskar (Mumbai), Sangita Abhyankar (Goa), Tukaram Dhande (Igatpuri), Bharat Daundkar (Pune) and Prashant More (Mumbai) will take part. Shailesh Lele and colleagues will present audio-visual program based on songs sung by Asha Bhosale ‘Asha-the Versatile’ at 9.30 PM on September 4th. ‘Hasari Gallery’ an exhibition of cartoons and caricatures will be inaugurated on August 27th at 4 PM and it will continue till August 29th between    11 AM to 8 PM at Balgandharva Kala Dalan.

Programs at Yashwantrao Chavan Natyagruha

      Various programs under Pune Festival will also take place at Yashwantrao Chavan Natyagruha and Kala Dalan. Among them, Ugawate Taare Part 1, a talent exhibition show for child artists will be held from 12.30 to 3.30 PM on August 26th. On the same day, Archana Sahakari, the artist from Goa honored with Sangit Ratna Award will present Classical Music recital and Sania Patankar will present Semi-Classical music program ‘Saptswaranche Indradhanu’. Atul Pethe and colleagues will present ‘Samaj Swasthya’ the Marathi play currently making waves form social reforms. On the same day   ‘Voice of Pune Festival’ will be held from 5 to 8 PM and Anuradha Bharati will coordinate this competition. Ugawate Taare Part 2 will be held from 5 to 8 PM on August 30th and ‘Musical Marathi Masti’ the program featuring new Marathi songs and dances will be presented at 9:30 PM. Ugawate Taare Part 3 will be held from 5 to 8 PM on August 31st. ‘Hasyotsav Ekpatrincha’ standup comedy extravaganza organized by Hasaaydan Foundation will be held from 5 to 8 PM on September 2nd and it will be compeered by Makrand Tillu. Vishwas Patwardhan, Dilip Halyal, Ashok Murudkar and Swati Surangalikar are the participating artists. Dance competition has been organized from 12.30 to 3.30 PM on September 3rd under the Mahila Mahotsav and a special program ‘Khel Paithanicha’ has been organized from 5 to 8 PM. Sulabha Ternikar and colleagues will present an audio-visual program ‘Sun Ja Dil Ki Dastaan’ based on old hit songs from 5 to 8 PM on September 4th.

      As with every year the ‘Keral Mahotsav’ an attraction form Keralites in Pune city and district will be held on the eve of Onam from 5 to 8 PM on September 2nd at Balgandharva Rangmandir. Veteran actor Jitendra will Inaugurate it. It has been organized in association with Pune Malayali Federation. It includes Vaaman Avtaar based on the story of King Mahaabali and Vaaman, Lavani Mahotsav, Mohini Attam, Katthakali dance, Kuchipudi, fusion of Bharat Natyam and classical music, traditional dance Thiruvathira  and also Oppana dance that displays unity of Hindu, Muslim and Christian. Artists from 18 member associations of Keralites in Pune district under Pune Malayali Federation will participate in it in large numbers. Rajan Nair, president of Pune Malayali Federation is the coordinator for the same.

      As with every year, Mahila Mahotsav under Pune Festival has received great response and competitions like Miss Pune Festival, recipe, dance, Paithani game, mehendi and painting competitions have been organized this year.  

     Miss Pune Festival, a special attraction of women will take place at 4 PM on September 4th at Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch in which more than 250 entries have been received and 20 pageants for quarter final round and 10 for final round will be chosen. In this personality pageant, points will be awarded based on walking, speaking, dressing, presence of mind, confidence and general knowledge. Supriya Tamhane has coordinated it.

      Recipe and mehendi competitions in Mahila Mahotsav will be held in Swapnashilp Hall – Apte Road from 11 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, September 2nd and the ‘To Tasa Ti’ recipe competition will be an added attraction. Participation from men has been specially taken for this. This competition involves readymade recipes brought from home and it includes nutritious barfi in sweets while spicy items made from besan in the spicy recipes. Mehendi competition has been organized along with the recipe competition and more than 300 women are participating in it. Deepali Pandhare and Sanyogita Kudale are coordinating it.

      A painting competition has been organized as usual for the women and its exhibition will be open for all on September 2nd, 3rd & 4th at Yashwant Rao Chavan Kala Dalan from 10 AM to 8 PM. More than 100 entries have been received for this and women artists from Pune as well as outside Pune have participated in it. The subject this year is ‘Navras’ and minimum 15×18 inches and maximum 2×2 ft. paintings will be there. Anuradha Bharati has coordinated it.

     ‘Hasari Gallery’ an exhibition of Cartoons and Caricatures will be exhibited at Bal Gandharva KalaDalan from 27th August to 29th August between 11 AM to 8 PM. Which will be inaugurated on August 27th at 4.00 pm. Many cartoonists from Pune will also be present on this occasion. This Exhibition consists of more than 1000 cartoons and caricatures of noted cartoonist like RK Lakshman, Balasaheb Thackarey, Dyanesh Sonar, Manohar Sapre, Vasant Sarvate and many others from Maharashtra. The size of the cartoons is 1.5×2 ft. On everyday different cartoons and caricatures will be displayed. On last day social awareness posters on save water, green earth, don’t spit on roads, protection of environment etc will be displayed to make awareness in the citizens. Kailash Bhingare has prepared and coordinated this exhibition for Pune Festival.

      As is every year, various sports competitions will take place in Pune Festival this year. This includes Golf Cup tournament, Roller Skating, Boxing, wrestling and Malla Khamb competitions.

     Pune Festival Golf Cup tournament is organized at 7:00 AM on September 2nd at Pune Golf Club, Yerwada and many executives of various companies from Delhi, Mumbai and Pune and Military officers will participate in it. It will have 100 competitors and Jaideep Patwardhan has coordinated it.

     The district level Roll ball competition is organized in Pune Festival in association with Pune District Roll ball Association at Mahesh Vidyalay – Kothrud from 10 AM to 4 PM on September 3rd in which 180 girls and boys from 15 schools from Pune are participating. Raju Dabhade has coordinated this event.

     The district level boxing competition is organized in Pune Festival in association with Pune District Boxing Federation from 10 AM to 4 PM on September 3rd at Lahuji Vastad Salve Stadium in which 180 boys and girls in 5 age groups are participating.  Ramesh Bagwe has coordinated it.

      Malla Khamb competition has been organized in association with Pune district Malla Khamb Association and Maharashtra Mandal. These competitions will be organized for full day on September 2nd & 3rd at Maharashtra Mandal on Tilak Road. About 250 competitors have participated in the girls’ Malla Khamb on rope and boys’ Malla Khamb on ground. Abhijit Bhosale and Sachin Pardeshi have coordinated it under the guidance of Dhananjay Damle of Maharashtra Mandal.

     The gala wrestling competition will be held in association with Maharashtra Wrestling Federation at late Mamasaheb Mohol wrestling complex – Katraj on September 3rd from 10 AM to 4 PM in which 120 competitors in 4 weight groups are participating. Balasaheb Landge General Secretary of Maharashtra Kustigir Parishad has coordinated it.  

     Prasanna Gokhale is the convenor of the sports committee of Pune Festival.
